Grief Support During the Holiday Season: Understanding, Coping, and Supporting Others

The Impact of Grief During the Holidays

The holiday season, often considered a time of joy and togetherness, can also be one of the most challenging periods for those who are grieving a loss. Nearly 95% of people who have experienced loss report dealing with at least one symptom of physical or mental distress, and approximately 10% of them develop prolonged grief disorder—a persistent and debilitating form of grief that does not ease with time.

Grief is most commonly associated with the death of a loved one, but it can also be triggered by other significant life changes, such as the loss or change of a friendship, a divorce, or even housing changes. The effects of grief extend beyond mental health, impacting physical well-being and increasing the risk of heart disease, immune dysfunction, and even death. Holidays and special occasions, which often include family gatherings, traditions, and reminders of what’s missing, can amplify this pain, leaving those grieving feeling isolated and overwhelmed.

Grief Support for Your Own Holidays and Special Occasions

Research supports several strategies for addressing grief, whether typical or prolonged:

Express emotions: Suppressing grief can exacerbate mental and physical health issues. Talking with trusted friends, journaling, and joining support groups can be therapeutic.

Engage in rituals: Personal or cultural rituals—such as lighting a candle, visiting a grave site, or creating a memory book—help integrate loss into one’s life.

Create new traditions to honor your loss: If you are mourning a death, consider integrating your loved one’s memory into the occasion by preparing their favorite dish, playing their favorite music, or hanging an ornament in their honor.

Seek professional support: Cognitive behavioral therapy or complicated grief therapy can be effective treatments for prolonged grief disorder. Emerging clinical research also points to the promise of psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Grief Support for Others Who Are Grieving

For those grieving, holidays and special occasions—such as birthdays or Mother’s Day—can be especially difficult. Consider these practical tips for supporting someone during these times:

Remember that grief is a process to be supported, not a problem to be solved.

Be present: The fear of saying the wrong thing is common, but often it is more important to simply show up and listen without judgment than to say the “perfect” thing.

Acknowledge the loss: Statements like “I’ve been thinking about (their loved one) and how much they meant to you” or “I want you to know that I’ve been thinking about you and the significance of what you’re experiencing right now” can be comforting.

Offer practical help: Assisting with tasks such as cooking, shopping, or child care can help relieve some of the burden.

If you don’t know what to say, it’s okay to admit it: “I don’t have the right words, but I’m here for you.”

Avoid dismissive phrases like “They’re in a better place” or “Everything happens for a reason.”

Focus on empathy and validation: Phrases like “This must be so hard for you” or “Tell me more about what you’re feeling” invite meaningful conversation and respect the complexity of grief.

Respect boundaries: Let your loved one honor their emotions and go at their own pace.

Navigating holidays and special occasions with those who have experienced a loss can be complicated. However, your presence and compassion can play a significant role in supporting their healing journey.

Reflections from a Hospice Volunteer

Drawing from my experience as a Hospice volunteer for over ten years, I have learned that being a good listener is essential. Being present with someone is often more important than the words being said. When appropriate, music and prayer can gently fill the difficult spaces that grief leaves behind. Sometimes, I read short angel stories from a special book to clients, offering comfort and a sense of connection to the sacredness of life.

The ending of one’s life is individualized as we are. There is a sense of the divine spark moving on from this realm to the promised land. We know we are going home, literally, back to spirit form.

There are moments in life when the veils between worlds feel thinner—moments when we sense that those we love, though no longer in the physical, are still very near. Mediumship is not a performance or a trick of the mind; it is a sacred invitation to remember that love is never lost.

As a medium, I simply open the space. I allow myself to become a bridge between this world and the spirit world—a gentle conduit for messages, emotions, and glimpses of memory from those who wish to remind you: I am still with you.

While a psychic reading explores your path and potential, mediumship is a soul-to-soul reunion. It’s where healing takes root, and peace often returns to the heart.

What Happens During Mediumship Readings?

Every connection is unique because every soul is unique. But most sessions unfold in three phases:

1. A Quiet Opening

We begin in stillness—grounded, present. I’ll share how I receive information, and you’re welcome to share intentions, and names, or simply sit with an open heart. You don’t have to “do” anything. Your loved ones already know you’re here.

2. Spirit Comes Forward

Spirit speaks in a language of energy and love. I may receive:
– Names or initials
– Descriptions of their personality or how they passed
– Specific memories or dates
– Images, phrases, sensations—even scents

It’s not like a phone call. It’s more like tuning into a subtle current—a stream of impressions that flow through feeling, sight, sound, and knowing. I translate what I receive into language you can recognize and hold close.

3. Messages from Beyond

The messages that come are often full of grace, forgiveness, and light. They may bring encouragement. They may bring a simple “I love you.” Sometimes they bring laughter. And always, they bring the reminder that the bond you share continues—it just looks different now.

Preparing for Your Mediumship Reading

There is no need for ritual or preparation—only receptivity. That said, here are a few ways to help your heart open wider:

– Come with openness, not expectation. Spirit may have something different—but deeply meaningful—to share.
– Jot down questions or names. You may not need them, but they can bring clarity or help you stay centered.
– Pay attention to your own feelings. What you sense, remember, or feel during the reading is part of the connection too.

A Gentle Closing

Sometimes the most profound healing arrives not in big declarations, but in quiet knowing. A familiar phrase. A song. A warm presence that says, I’m still here, and I’ve never stopped loving you.
You are never alone. And if you feel called to reach across the veil, know that Spirit is already listening.

With love and light,
Tess
The Treasure Coast Medium

Affirmations are not just words we speak—they are declarations of our connection to the divine creative force that flows through all things. When you affirm something, you’re not just trying to make it happen—you are aligning yourself with what already exists in the unseen. The key is not to say affirmations mindlessly, but to speak them with the energy of belief, love, and presence. “I am peaceful,” “I am abundant,” “I am healed”—these are reminders of your true nature, not distant goals to chase. The Universe responds to what we embody and know to be true.

It is through the power of imagination that these affirmations come alive. You must not only say the words—you must feel them. See the end result as already complete. Feel the joy of being who you already are in your highest self. That’s how spirit works—it sees no limitations, no time. When you speak your affirmations, infuse them with emotion, with certainty, with the knowing that you are not separate from what you desire.

Right now, we are living in extraordinary times. Pluto has entered Aquarius, Neptune moved into Aries, and Uranus prepares to shift into Gemini. These are changes in the outer planets—movements that haven’t happened in over two centuries. The energy of transformation, awakening, and accelerated change is upon us. If ever there were a time to speak your truth and align with the divine within, it is now. Your affirmations, said with heartfelt intention, are your way of aligning with the new frequency of the planet. As the external world transforms, you are invited to transform within. Speak your affirmations with the intent to create your reality, but remember you already have everything you need..

Mother’s Day is not merely a date on the calendar — it is a sacred invitation to remember the infinite ways love shows up in our lives. For some, this day brings joy, laughter, and the sweet memory of a nurturing hand. For others, it brings tender sorrow, unresolved feelings, or the ache of what was never received. Wherever you find yourself, know this: you are exactly where you need to be, and your feelings are not only valid — they are your teachers.

We are not all shaped by the same story. Some were blessed with mothers whose love was like sunlight — warm, constant, life-giving. Others carry the weight of loss, or the echo of a love they longed for but never knew. And many among us are mothers in a deeper, spiritual sense — caregivers to animals, keepers of beauty and wisdom, creators of ideas, stewards of community. Mothering is not a title. It is a vibration. It is the energy of the Divine Feminine expressing through you.

If someone you cherished is no longer walking beside you in physical form — a mother, a grandmother, a soul who made you feel at home — remember this great truth: no one ever truly dies. We are all spiritual beings having a temporary human experience. The soul lives on, and love continues in unseen, miraculous ways. A dream, a breeze, a perfectly timed song — these are not coincidences. They are gentle winks from the universe, reminding you: I am still with you.

I once thought of someone I deeply missed, and without warning, the lyrics “I’m Alright” by Kenny Loggins came into my awareness. I smiled, because I knew — that was not memory. That was presence. That was spirit saying, You don’t have to worry about me. I’m just a thought away.

So today, wherever you are in your journey — whether you are honoring a beloved mother, healing from a painful chapter, or nurturing the world in your own sacred way — be still. Breathe. Open yourself to the silent whispers of Spirit. You are never alone. You are always loved. And the act of loving — in whatever form it takes — is the highest expression of your divine nature.

Let love be your practice. Let grace be your guide. And know: You are a miracle.
